Attention Disorder

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, commonly also known as ADD or ADHD. Children with this disorder manifest either symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity or there is this third category of children who may manifest symptoms of both inattention as well as that of hyperactivity/impulsivity.

Inattention is usually identified by problems in school work. Child often may be caught day dreaming, fails to finish written work, often making careless mistakes, and often forgetting many things. Disorganization is common, and the child may regularly lose personal items like water bottles, books, compass etc. Even when spoken to directly, the child may not pay attention to what is said, and be unable to provide feedback when asked. The child will regularly fail to complete homework & assignments in school, have difficulties with activities of daily living at home like packing bags, keeping things properly etc.

Younger children may be over active and exhibit these behaviours normally, hence while assessing these children age is an important factor. ADHD is often therefore identified only after child is in school. Parents and caregivers can provide children with host of different ways to help child compensate for the attention problem. ADHD children have average or above average intelligence but their academic performance gets affected since the lack of attention often affects the learning opportunity and learning outcome of the child.

Impulsive and Hyperactive behaviour are easier to identify, because the ADHD child is always on the go, rarely sits still for very long. Even when sitting, the child fidgets and bounces in his/her seat. In school, the child has trouble remaining seated, and waiting for his turn so frequently blurts out answers or questions, out of turn. The child often talks incessantly, never ceasing to talk about everything, and to everyone who will listen. They have difficulty with peers at play since they often find it difficult to follow rules or wait for their turn.

Hyperactive children frequently get into trouble in class especially since they are restless, often distract others and are always distracted. They may be a constant source of disruption in class. All this contributing to poor conduct in school.
